How to Select the Right Test and Measurement Equipment
Selecting a suitable test instrument starts with the electrical quantity or event that must be generated, measured, or evaluated. The required voltage and current range, accuracy, resolution, sampling rate, timing behaviour, automation interfaces, and safety requirements should then be considered.
- Source and measure voltage or current: Choose a source measure unit such as the N2600 when voltage or current must be generated and measured with high precision. Typical applications include semiconductor characterization, component testing, resistance measurement, leakage-current measurement, and four-quadrant operation.
- Analyse fast disconnection events: Choose the N8150A disconnection module when fast electrical interruptions, contactor behaviour, switching events, or BMS disconnection functions must be captured with high time resolution.
- Measure battery voltage and internal resistance: Choose the TH2523 battery tester for precise measurement of battery voltage and AC internal resistance. Typical applications include battery-cell inspection, sorting, quality control, and production testing.
- Measure insulation resistance: Choose the TH2692 insulation resistance tester when insulation quality, leakage paths, or electrical safety must be evaluated at an adjustable test voltage.
- Measurement range: Define the maximum and minimum voltage, current, resistance, and power values. Also consider pulse values, overload conditions, DUT energy, and the required measurement range around zero.
- Accuracy and resolution: Separate the required accuracy from the displayed resolution. Consider basic accuracy, range-dependent specifications, temperature drift, noise, repeatability, and the required measurement uncertainty for the complete test setup.
- Speed and timing: For switching, disconnection, or transient measurements, check sampling rate, time resolution, trigger delay, event duration, bandwidth, and synchronization with other test equipment.
- Channels and test throughput: Determine whether one or several DUTs must be tested simultaneously. Multi-channel or modular solutions can increase throughput in automated production and end-of-line test systems.
- Interfaces and automation: For automated test equipment (ATE), verify remote-control commands, trigger inputs, data logging, software compatibility, API or driver support, and available communication interfaces.
- Safety and DUT protection: Consider maximum DUT voltage, isolation, grounding, protected connectors, interlocks, emergency shutdown, current limiting, discharge behaviour, and protection against accidental contact.
- Calibration and traceability: Check the required calibration interval, calibration procedure, test documentation, and whether traceable measurement results are needed for quality assurance or production testing.
- System integration: Verify how the instrument communicates and synchronizes with power supplies, electronic loads, battery simulators, switching units, measurement modules, and the central test-system controller.
