Communication Module

NXI communication modules connect the modular measurement and test platform to PCs, test software, higher-level controllers, and industrial bus systems. They provide data transmission, system control, and communication between NXI chassis, functional modules, and the external automation environment.

The portfolio includes high-performance LAN master controllers and modules for connecting external bus systems. The NXI-1000 provides control and data transmission via Gigabit LAN, while the NXI-1100 supports 10 Gigabit LAN for systems with particularly high data volumes. The NXI-1401 is a CAN converter for directly integrating CAN-based devices and DUTs. Depending on the system configuration, relevant communication protocols may include SCPI, Modbus RTU, CANopen, and CAN.

Combining these modules with NXI measurement and control chassis, DAQ and measurement modules, digital I/O modules, and NXI power modules provides scalable solutions for automated test benches, end-of-line testing, and industrial ATE systems.

How to Select an NXI Communication Module

Selecting a suitable communication module depends on the required interface, communication protocol, and expected data volume. The transmission rate, response time, network topology, synchronization requirements, and integration into the existing test software should also be considered.

  • Master controller or bus converter: A master controller provides central communication between the NXI chassis and higher-level test software. A bus converter connects external devices, controllers, or DUTs with a specific bus interface to the test sequence.
  • Required interface: Determine whether communication must use Ethernet or LAN, or an industrial bus such as CAN. The interface and physical connection must be compatible with the existing test environment.
  • Data transmission rate: Channel count, sampling rate, and measurement duration determine the generated data volume. A controller with higher network bandwidth may be required for large channel counts or high-speed DAQ applications. The NXI-1000 uses Gigabit LAN, while the NXI-1100 supports 10 Gigabit LAN.
  • Communication protocol: Verify which protocol is used by the test software, controller, and connected devices. Depending on the module and system configuration, relevant protocols within the NXI platform may include SCPI, Modbus RTU, CANopen, and CAN.
  • Latency and response time: A high maximum data rate does not automatically provide a short or constant response time. For time-critical tests, latency, command processing, and update rate should be evaluated under realistic system conditions.
  • CAN configuration: CAN applications require the baud rate, identifiers, message format, bus load, and termination to be defined. The NXI-1401 can be used to integrate CAN-based DUTs and electronic control units into the NXI test environment.
  • Number of connected devices: Consider how many modules, chassis, and external devices must communicate simultaneously. Also verify the permissible cable length, network topology, and maximum number of participants supported by the selected interface.
  • Chassis and slot requirements: The communication module must be compatible with the selected NXI chassis. Include the required controller and module slots when planning the complete system.
  • Measurement data and bandwidth reserve: When combining communication modules with high-speed NXI DAQ and measurement modules, allow sufficient capacity for measurement data, status information, and control commands. This helps prevent bottlenecks when the system is expanded.
  • Triggering and synchronization: Communication, data acquisition, and control signals must be coordinated for time-correlated tests. Verify how trigger events are transmitted and how multiple modules or chassis can be synchronized.
  • Software and command structure: Determine which drivers, programming interfaces, and remote-control commands are available. The communication solution must be compatible with the test software and intended programming environment.
  • Integration of digital signals: If the test sequence also requires status, trigger, enable, or fault signals, the system can be extended with digital NXI I/O modules.
  • Network and IT requirements: Coordinate IP addressing, static or dynamic addresses, required ports, and access from the company network with the IT department at an early stage. User access and network segmentation may also be relevant for production systems.
  • Isolation and electromagnetic compatibility: Galvanic isolation, grounding, shielding, and suitable cable routing are particularly important for long cables, different reference potentials, or electrically noisy industrial environments.
  • Connection loss and fault behavior: Verify how the system reacts to interrupted communication, network failure, or the loss of a connected device. Defined safe states should be provided for critical test processes.
