NXI-1401-2 CAN communication converter overview
The NXI-1401-2 is a two-channel CAN communication converter module. It connects CAN devices to a PC or system controller via Ethernet and enables CAN messages to be sent and received over a network. CAN1 and CAN2 have separate connections and are isolated from each other. The specified isolation voltage is 2,000 V DC. Both channels support CAN 2.0A/B with baud rates from 5 kbit/s to 1 Mbit/s. An integrated 120 Ω termination resistor can be enabled in software when required. The module occupies one slot in an NXI-F1000 chassis; independent operation with a 12 V DC supply and LAN connection is also documented. This makes it a communication component for CAN-related test setups in automotive electronics, BMS testing and CAN device testing.
Key benefits
Two CAN connections
CAN1 and CAN2 are available in one module, allowing two bus connections to be integrated into a test setup.
Isolated channels
The channels are isolated from each other; the specified isolation voltage is 2,000 V DC.
Variable baud rate
The 5 kbit/s to 1 Mbit/s range allows adaptation to different CAN bus speeds.
Switchable termination
The integrated 120 Ω resistor is enabled in software when termination is required at the bus position.
CAN 2.0A/B
Standard and extended frames, plus data and remote frames, cover the documented CAN frame formats.
Two operating configurations
The plug-in module can be used in an NXI-F1000 chassis or separately with 12 V power and LAN.
Operating principle
The module links CAN-side communication to an Ethernet connection for control. A PC can send and receive CAN messages over the network. Configuration covers the baud rate, termination resistor status and CAN frame ID filtering. Each CAN channel uses a four-pin plug-in connector with GND, CANL, SHLD and CANH. Termination depends on the actual bus wiring; 120 Ω are used at each end of the bus.
Model and technical data
| Model | CAN channels | Baud rate | Inter-channel isolation | Termination resistor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NXI-1401-2 | 2 (CAN1, CAN2) | 5 kbit/s to 1 Mbit/s | 2,000 V DC | 120 Ω, software switchable |
These figures apply to one NXI-1401-2 module.
CAN functions and configuration
| Function | Implementation | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Frame format | Standard and extended | Communication with CAN 2.0A/B devices |
| Frame type | Data and remote frames | Exchange of the documented message types |
| Baud rate | Adjustable from 5 kbit/s to 1 Mbit/s | Match the CAN bus speed |
| Termination | Integrated 120 Ω, controlled in software | Bus termination without an external resistor when needed at the bus position |
