N8331 battery cell simulator overview

The N8331 series is a programmable multi-channel battery cell simulator for precise low-voltage and multi-channel testing. Depending on the model, it provides 16 or 24 isolated channels with 0-5 V or 0-6 V, up to 3 A and up to 15 W per channel. Voltage and current can be set separately for every channel. Channel isolation allows multiple outputs to be connected in series to reproduce a cell stack or the electrical state of a battery pack. The series includes N8331A, N8331B, N8331C and the N8331BP and N8331CP models with extended low-current measurement capability. All variants use a 19-inch 2U chassis. The application software supports multi-channel batch operation, channel-specific data and graph display, data analysis and reporting. Typical fields include BMS/CMS testing, portable electronics and the calibration of voltage-acquisition devices.

Key benefits

High channel density

Up to 24 channels in 2U enable parallel test stations with fewer individual instruments.

Isolated outputs

Isolation of every channel supports flexible series connections for multi-cell devices under test.

Accurate voltage simulation

0.6 mV setting and readback accuracy at 23 ± 5 °C supports repeatable cell-voltage levels.

Measure small currents

BP and CP models provide dedicated mA ranges with 0.1 µA resolution for quiescent-current measurements.

Four-wire sense

Direct voltage measurement at the DUT compensates for voltage drop caused by lead resistance.

Multi-channel evaluation

Batch operation, channel-specific graphs, data analysis and reports streamline complex multi-channel workflows.

Operating principle and connection

Voltage and current are set separately for each channel. The isolated channels can be routed individually to several DUTs or connected in series to form a cell stack. For larger stacks, the series also supports serial connection of multiple instruments; remote control and automated workflows are performed with the application software.

Four-wire connection: Two leads carry the output current, while two sense leads measure voltage directly at the DUT. This removes voltage drop across the power leads from the regulated and measured voltage.

Models and output ranges

N8331BP160-5 V0-2 A10 W0-2 mA
N8331CP160-5 V0-3 A15 W0-3 mA

The P variants combine their respective A range with a separate low-current range. In that range, setting and readback resolution are 0.1 µA; the corresponding setting and readback accuracy is 2 µA for N8331BP and 3 µA for N8331CP, each at 23 ± 5 °C.

Typical applications

Vehicle BMS and CMS testing

Isolated channels reproduce individual cell voltages for battery-management and cell-management systems in new-energy vehicles.

UAV battery management

Multi-channel cell voltages support BMS/CMS test setups for unmanned aerial vehicles.

Energy-storage BMS

In storage systems, the N8331 provides precise channel-by-channel simulation of cell voltages.

Voltage-acquisition calibration

Defined channel voltages provide references for acquisition devices such as fuel-cell voltage monitors.

BMS test platform and system integration

In a modular BMS test platform, the N8331 provides high-accuracy multi-channel battery simulation. Other tasks such as temperature, total-current, high-voltage, insulation, I/O or CAN simulation are provided by additional units in the described system architecture. The N8331 cell-voltage simulation can therefore be integrated into comprehensive workflows for accuracy, protection parameters, fault diagnosis, wake-up, balancing, SOC, pre-charge and PWM without attributing all of those system functions to the standalone instrument.

Frequently asked questions about the N8331 series

How many channels are available?

N8331A provides 24 channels. N8331B, N8331C, N8331BP and N8331CP each provide 16 channels.

Can channels be connected in series?

Yes. Every channel is isolated and intended for multi-channel series connection; multiple instruments can also be connected serially for larger cell stacks.

Which models measure in the µA range?

N8331BP provides a 0-2 mA range and N8331CP a 0-3 mA range. Both offer 0.1 µA resolution in that range.

How accurately is voltage set?

Setting and readback accuracy are 0.6 mV at 23 ± 5 °C, with 0.1 mV resolution.

How are lead losses compensated?

Four-wire sense measures voltage directly at the DUT and compensates for voltage drop across the current-carrying leads.

How is the instrument controlled remotely?

LAN and isolated RS485 integrate the instrument into automated workflows; the application software operates channels in batches and evaluates data.

Can the N8331 be used for BMS/CMS testing?

Yes. It simulates individual cell voltages in test setups for vehicles, UAVs and energy storage. Additional units are required for other system signals.

Can it test portable electronics in production?

Yes. Listed application fields include R&D and production of mobile phones, Bluetooth earphones and smartwatches.

Can it calibrate voltage-acquisition devices?

Yes. Its precise channel voltages are suitable for calibrating voltage-acquisition devices such as fuel-cell voltage monitors.

Technical consultation and project enquiry

Selecting the appropriate N8331 requires the channel count, voltage, current and power per channel, plus the expected low-current range. Please also specify the planned series connection, sense wiring, interfaces and test workflow.
