N8330 battery simulator overview

The N8330 Series combines a programmable DC source for emulating individual cell voltages with high channel density and precise voltage control. The N8330A provides 24 channels rated at 0–6 V and 0–1 A each. The N8330B and N8330C each provide 16 channels rated at 0–5 V and 0–2 A or 0–3 A respectively. Every channel is isolated and can be set independently; multiple instruments can be connected in series for larger battery stacks. Four-wire sensing measures voltage directly at the DUT and reduces the influence of lead resistance. The 19-inch, 2U design is suited to test systems with many parallel stations. The associated application software supports multi-channel batch operation, graphical data display, analysis and reporting. LAN and isolated RS485 connect the battery simulator to automated test environments.

Key benefits

High channel density in 2U

Up to 24 channels in one 19-inch instrument reduce rack space and instrument count for parallel test tasks.

Precise cell voltages

10 µV resolution and 0.001% + 0.1 mV accuracy enable finely graduated setpoints and readback values.

Isolated channels

500 V DC inter-channel isolation facilitates multi-cell simulations and separate test stations.

Four-wire sensing at the DUT

Separate sense leads measure voltage at the connection point and compensate for voltage drop in the load leads.

Low ripple

Voltage ripple of no more than 2 mV RMS supports the emulation of a stable DC cell voltage.

Software-based multi-channel operation

Batch operation, graph display, data analysis and reporting simplify the evaluation of complex multi-channel tests.

Multi-channel battery simulation principle

Each output channel operates as an independently programmable DC source with constant-voltage and constant-current control. Voltage and the current limit are set and read back per channel. This provides defined cell voltages while limiting current within the range of the selected model.

Each channel is isolated from the other channels. Multiple N8330 instruments can be connected in series for larger battery stacks. The application software provides remote control and supports automated multi-channel testing.

Models and electrical ranges

ModelChannelsVoltage per channelCurrent per channelPower per channel
N8330A240–6 V0–1 A6 W
N8330B160–5 V0–2 A10 W
N8330C160–5 V0–3 A15 W

Selection note: Channel count, maximum cell voltage, current limit and power apply per channel. Every operating point must remain within the model's voltage, current and power ratings at the same time.

Communication response time≤ 10 msInstrument interface

Four-wire sensing separates the current path from voltage measurement. This measures voltage at the DUT and largely removes the voltage drop across the connecting leads from the control result.

Typical applications

BMS and CMS testing

Isolated channels emulate individual cell voltages for battery and cell management systems in vehicles and energy storage systems.

UAV and drone electronics

Multi-channel cell voltages support the development and testing of the associated BMS and CMS electronics.

Calibration of voltage acquisition devices

Precisely programmable cell voltages provide a reference for voltage acquisition devices such as fuel-cell voltage monitors.

N8330 FAQ

Which N8330 model is suitable for the application?

The N8330A provides 24 channels up to 6 V and 1 A. The N8330B and N8330C provide 16 channels up to 5 V at 2 A or 3 A respectively.

Can multiple instruments be connected as a battery stack?

Yes. Multiple N8330 instruments can be connected in series for additional series-connected cells and remotely controlled through the application software.

How is the influence of the connecting leads reduced?

Four-wire sensing uses two leads for the output and two separate sense leads to measure voltage directly at the DUT.

Which automation capabilities are available?

LAN and isolated RS485 provide remote control. The application software supports batch operation, graph display, analysis and reporting.

How quickly does the output respond to load changes?

For a 10 to 90% load change at full output voltage, the specified recovery time to within ± 50 mV is no more than 200 µs.

Can the N8330 be used for BMS and CMS testing?

Yes. Its isolated, independently programmable channels emulate cell voltages for BMS and CMS testing in vehicles, UAVs and energy storage systems.

Is the series suitable for portable electronics?

Yes. Its stated application fields include R&D and production of mobile phones, Bluetooth earphones, smartwatches and comparable portable devices.

Can voltage acquisition devices be calibrated?

Yes. Its precise cell voltages are suited to calibrating voltage acquisition devices such as fuel-cell voltage monitors.
