N39400 multi-channel DC power supply overview

The N39400 programmable DC power supply provides four isolated output channels for laboratory testing, system integration and production burn-in. Six models cover voltages up to 60 V or 150 V. Depending on the model, each channel provides 200 W, 360 W or 600 W and a maximum current of 4 A, 6 A, 10 A or 15 A. Voltage, current and power must be considered together when selecting each channel’s operating points.

The outputs use constant voltage and constant current regulation. Selectable CV/CC priority influences start-up behaviour, while remote sense compensates for voltage drops between the instrument and the DUT. Recurring supply routines can be stored as SEQ files. A 4.3-inch colour display, buttons and a rotary knob provide local operation; LAN, RS232 and PC application software support remote control. The 19-inch 2U format helps create compact test stations with multiple separate power rails.

Key benefits

Four test stations in one instrument

Four isolated, individually adjustable outputs supply separate DUTs and reduce the number of individual power supplies required.

Select the start-up behaviour

Voltage or current priority supports an output rise suited to the DUT and reduces the relevant type of overshoot.

Reproduce supply routines

Ten sequence files with up to 200 steps each, repetition settings and file linking reproduce recurring supply profiles.

Compensate for cable drops

A four-wire connection with up to 2 V compensation improves voltage regulation at the load connection when longer supply cables are used.

Control multiple instruments centrally

Dual LAN and PC software support setups with multiple instruments as well as the display and recording of measured values.

Set limits for each channel

Adjustable overvoltage, overcurrent and overpower limits shut down the output when exceeded; overtemperature protection adds internal monitoring.

Regulation and channel operation

In CV operation, the instrument regulates output voltage while the required load current remains below the configured current limit. Once that limit is reached, CC regulation takes over and voltage adjusts to the load. Priority selection determines the preferred control behaviour during output rise: CV priority suits sensitive processor or FPGA supplies, for example, while CC priority suits low-impedance loads and battery charging applications.

Voltage and current are set individually for each channel. The “All CH” view allows common setpoints for all four channels and switches all outputs on or off together.

Models and power range

N39436-150-060–150 V0–6 A360 W4
N39460-150-060–150 V0–6 A600 W4

The maximum voltage and current ratings are not unrestricted simultaneous operating points. For each channel, P = U × I applies within its voltage, current and power limits. For example, 60 V at 15 A would require 900 W from an N39460-60-15 channel; at 60 V, its 600 W rating imposes a calculated upper current limit of 10 A. Channel power must be considered when sizing the supply for each individual DUT.

Resolution and dynamic behaviour

Current resolution, setting and readback1 mA1 mA
Voltage ripple, 20 Hz–20 MHz≤20 mV RMS; ≤250 mV peak-to-peak≤25 mV RMS; ≤300 mV peak-to-peak

Voltage and current rise times are adjustable. The no-load timing values describe output behaviour under the stated condition; resolution denotes the smallest setting or display increment.

Typical applications

Electronic assemblies in the laboratory

Supply separate power rails or multiple DUTs with individual voltage and current settings and monitor them on the colour display.

Production testing and burn-in

Supply up to four test stations simultaneously; integrate recurring routines into the production test system using SEQ and remote control.

Processor and FPGA supplies

Use CV priority to reduce voltage overshoot during start-up and remote sense to measure the supply voltage at the DUT.

Supply profiles for automotive electronics

Program voltage and current steps with SEQ for changing supply conditions and engine start-up test routines; check profile requirements against the instrument’s operating range.

Protection functions

OVP, OCP and OPP monitor adjustable voltage, current and power limits. Exceeding a limit shuts down the output and displays the corresponding protection message. OTP shuts down the output if the internal temperature becomes too high; its threshold is fixed within the instrument. Short-circuit protection is also provided. Protection messages can be acknowledged manually using “PROT-CLR”.

Frequently asked questions about the N39400

Are the four channels isolated from each other?

Yes. The four output channels are isolated from each other and can be adjusted individually.

Does 600 W refer to the entire instrument?

The N39460-60-15 and N39460-150-06 are specified at 600 W per channel. All three electrical limits of each channel must be observed.

How large can a sequence be?

There are 10 SEQ files with up to 200 steps per file. Repetitions and links to other files are configurable.

When is remote sense useful?

When supply cable voltage drops affect the voltage at the DUT. The compensated voltage drop must not exceed 2 V.

Is GPIB built in?

LAN and RS232 are integrated. GPIB connectivity is available through the optional NE101 RS232-to-GPIB converter.

Can multiple production test stations be supplied?

Yes. Four isolated channels support four test stations simultaneously. All CH simplifies common settings and simultaneous switching.

Which priority suits processor or FPGA cores?

CV priority is intended for these voltage-sensitive supplies to reduce voltage overshoot during output rise.

Can the N39400 be used for battery charging?

Battery charging is an application for CC priority to reduce current overshoot. Voltage, charging current and power must match the selected channel.
