N36600 overview: programmable DC power supply
The N36600 series comprises two single-channel DC power supplies for development, laboratory work, production aging and automated test systems. The N36610-80-06 provides 100 W and the N36620-80-08 provides 200 W. Both models offer a voltage range of 0.5 to 81 V, with current ranges up to 6.0 A and 8.2 A respectively. The available voltage and current combinations are determined by the power limit of each model.
Local operation uses buttons, a rotary knob and a VA display. Output power and elapsed output-on time can be displayed in addition to voltage and current. Stored voltage and current settings support recurring tasks. Separate sense connections enable regulation at the device under test, while LAN and serial interfaces provide remote control. The narrow enclosure suits individual workstations; an optional 4U chassis integrates multiple channels.
Key benefits
More operating points per instrument
The wide-range characteristic supports higher voltages at lower currents and higher currents at lower voltages, within the 100 W or 200 W power rating.
Fine setpoint adjustments
Voltage resolution of 10 mV and current resolution of 1 mA apply to both setting and readback, supporting targeted adjustments at the test station.
Recall recurring settings
Four shortcut memories per group and 100 groups store voltage and current values. Frequently used operating points can be recalled directly.
Measure voltage at the DUT
Four-wire sense accounts for cable losses in voltage regulation and supports setups where the instrument and device under test are separated.
More stable measurement readings
Selectable voltage and current measurement filters with moving or exponential averaging make fluctuating values easier to read.
Record measurement trends
The PC application software displays voltage, current, power and time, and can save measurement data for subsequent evaluation.
Operating principle and wide-range characteristic
In constant voltage (CV) mode, the instrument regulates its output voltage to the setpoint. When load current reaches the configured current limit, it automatically switches to constant current (CC) mode and adjusts output voltage to the load. Once current falls below the limit, the supply returns to CV mode.
Available power also limits the operating point: P = U × I. Within the permissible voltage range, I ≤ min(maximum current, maximum power/U). At 80 V, the calculated current limit is 1.25 A for the 100 W model and 2.5 A for the 200 W model. Maximum voltage and maximum current are therefore not available simultaneously.
Models and output ranges
| Model | Voltage range | Current range | Output power | Channels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| N36610-80-06 | 0.5–81 V | 0–6.0 A | 100 W | 1 |
| N36620-80-08 | 0.5–81 V | 0–8.2 A | 200 W | 1 |
All values apply to one instrument. Model selection must account for voltage, current and power at the actual operating point.
Resolution, ripple and dynamic response
| Parameter | N36610-80-06 | N36620-80-08 |
|---|---|---|
| Voltage setting and readback resolution | 10 mV | 10 mV |
| Current setting and readback resolution | 1 mA | 1 mA |
| Voltage ripple and noise, 20 Hz–20 MHz | ≤10 mV RMS | ≤10 mV RMS |
| Current ripple and noise, 20 Hz–20 MHz | ≤8 mA RMS | ≤8 mA RMS |
| Voltage rise time, no load / full load | ≤300 ms / ≤300 ms | ≤300 ms / ≤300 ms |
| Voltage fall time, no load / full load | ≤500 ms / ≤200 ms | ≤500 ms / ≤300 ms |
| Voltage load regulation | ≤20 mV | ≤30 mV |
| Current load regulation | ≤10 mA | ≤10 mA |
Resolution and accuracy are different parameters. Selectable measurement averaging stabilizes the display; it does not change the stated resolutions.
Operation and programmable functions
| Function | Operation and benefit |
|---|---|
| Shortcut memories | 100 groups, each containing four stored voltage and current settings, for recurring operating points. |
| Measurement filters | Voltage and current filters can be enabled separately; exponential or moving averaging with a factor or sample count from 1 to 64. |
| Trigger selection | Choose key, rear-panel TTL or communication triggering; a further mode accepts only TRIGger:IMMediate. |
| Display and keypad lock | Switch between voltage/current and time/power displays; keypad locking helps prevent unintended changes. |
| Output control | Switch the output using the On/Off button; measured voltage and current are displayed while the output is enabled. |
Typical applications
Development and laboratory work
Power electronic devices under test at different operating points. CV/CC regulation, fine resolution and shortcut memories support recurring laboratory tasks.
Production aging tests
Supply devices under test with defined DC settings during production aging. The PC software can record voltage, current and power trends.
Automated test stations
Integrate DC power into ATE systems. Remote control, external triggering and the optional multi-channel chassis support setups with several test channels.
Interfaces, software and system integration
| Equipment | Classification | Function |
|---|---|---|
| LAN | Integrated interface | Network connectivity and operation with the PC application software. |
| RS232 / RS485 | Integrated interfaces | Serial instrument communication for remote control. |
| SCPI / Modbus-RTU | Supported protocols | Protocol selection in the instrument menu; match communication settings to the controller. |
| RS485/TRIG | Rear-panel connection | RS485 communication and external TTL trigger input. |
| PC application software | Instrument control software | Set parameters, display readings and graphs, and save recordings in .ndat format. |
| 4U chassis | Option | Integration of up to eight DC power supply channels. |
The optional chassis provides multi-channel integration. Model ratings still apply to each instrument; housing several units together does not combine their power at a single output channel.
Installation and infrastructure
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| AC input | Single-phase, 100–240 V AC, 47–63 Hz |
| Dimensions W × D × H | 55 × 315 × 140 mm |
| Net weight | Approximately 1.8 kg |
| Operating environment | 0–40 °C; relative humidity ≤80%, non-condensing |
| Storage | −10–70 °C; relative humidity ≤70%, non-condensing |
| Cooling and connection | Keep fan openings unobstructed and ensure a reliable protective earth connection. |
Select load cables for the required current, voltage and cable length. Keep sense leads short and twisted, and route them separately from the AC power cable.
Protection functions
Overvoltage and overcurrent protection (OVP/OCP) have adjustable thresholds. When protection is enabled, a trip switches the output off. Protection is enabled through the P_ON setting. Overtemperature protection (OTP) is also provided. An OCP shutdown and normal CC regulation serve different purposes: CC limits operating current, whereas OCP triggers a protective shutdown.
