N36200 programmable DC power supply overview
The N36200 is a single-channel programmable DC power supply with a wide-range output for development, verification and automated test equipment. Models range from 500 W to 10 kW, with rated voltages from 20 V to 1,500 V. Rated currents reach up to 1,100 A depending on the model. These series maxima apply to different models and are not available simultaneously.
Constant voltage, constant current and constant power operation are combined with programmable sequences, charging functions and adjustable voltage and current transitions. Half-width and full-width 19-inch models in 1U or 2U formats support benchtop and rack use. An LCD, buttons and rotary encoder provide local operation; digital interfaces and PC software enable remote control. Remote sense measures voltage at the device under test. For higher current and power, units of the same model can operate in a master-slave parallel configuration.
Key benefits
Cover more operating points
The wide-range characteristic provides different voltage and current combinations within rated power, supporting changing test requirements.
Save rack space
Up to 5 kW in 1U and 10 kW in 2U support compact power systems with high output power per rack unit.
Adapt start-up behaviour
CV priority reduces voltage overshoot, while CC priority reduces current overshoot, for example with sensitive electronics or low-impedance devices.
Repeat test procedures
Programmable voltage, current and timing parameters reproduce recurring test steps and reduce manual adjustments.
Regulate at the load
Separate sense leads provide voltage feedback from the load terminals and compensate for lead losses within model-specific limits.
Record measurement trends
The PC software records voltage, current and power, stores test data and supports subsequent graphical analysis.
Operating principle and wide-range characteristic
In CV operation, the source regulates output voltage; in CC operation, it regulates output current. CP mode sets an output power target with additional voltage and current limits. CV/CC priority determines which control loop takes priority during start-up.
The operating point follows P = U × I. For U > 0 within the permitted output range, I_max = min(I_rated, P_rated / U). Rated voltage and rated current therefore cannot generally be used simultaneously.
Example N36225-80-80: At 80 V, the 2,500 W power rating limits current to 31.25 A. The rated current of 80 A is mathematically available up to 31.25 V within the power limit.
Models and output ratings
All models have one output channel. The table lists rated values; the power limit also applies to each operating point.

Dynamic performance and regulation
Voltage and current transitions can be configured by transition time or slew rate. Achievable dynamic performance depends on the model, operating point and load. Rise time, fall time and transient recovery time are separate parameters.
For the N36225-20-275, voltage rise time is ≤10 ms at both no load and full load. Voltage fall time is ≤10 ms at full load and ≤300 ms at no load. Following a load change between 10% and 90%, output voltage recovers to within 0.5% of rated voltage around the setpoint in ≤5 ms. These values apply to this model.
N36225-20-275 example at 23 ±5 °C: voltage setting and readback accuracy are each ≤0.03% + 0.02% F.S.; current setting and readback accuracy are each ≤0.1% + 0.1% F.S. F.S. denotes the respective full-scale value. Measurement accuracy additionally applies within one year after calibration and at relative humidity up to 80%.
Operating modes and programmable functions
| Function | Operation and benefit |
|---|---|
| V/I and CP | Set voltage and current or regulate constant output power with upper voltage and current limits. |
| SEQ | Automatically execute timed test steps with voltage, current, dwell time and repetitions. |
| Charge Test | Set charging voltage and current. Time, voltage, current and capacity provide cut-off conditions; reaching any one condition ends charging. |
| Car Wave | Generate automotive voltage profiles such as start-up, short voltage dips, load dump and voltage reset for vehicle electronics tests. The profile and device dynamics must match the test requirement. |
| Internal resistance simulation | Set an internal resistance parameter to adapt source output behaviour to the test. |
| Slew Control | Configure voltage and current rise and fall using time or slew rate. |

Interfaces, software and automation
| Feature | Availability and function |
|---|---|
| LAN, RS232, RS485, CAN | Digital device interfaces for remote control and integration into automated test systems. |
| SCPI, Modbus-RTU, CANopen | Supported command sets and communication protocols. CANopen uses CAN; the assignment of other protocols must be considered during integration. |
| PC software | Device configuration, operation, voltage/current/power display, data recording and analysis. |
| COM2 – optional | Analog programming and monitoring of voltage, current or power using 0–5 V or 0–10 V, plus digital inputs and outputs. Not available on half-width 19-inch 1U models above 80 V; check availability for the selected configuration. |
| Four-wire sense | Separate connections for local or remote voltage sensing. |
Parallel operation and system integration
Units of the same model support master-slave parallel operation. One master transmits settings and acquires measurement data and operating status from the slaves. Output leads and the required communication links connect through COM1 or the PARA port, depending on the model.
The N362100-20-1100 supports a maximum of eight identical units in parallel. This limit does not automatically apply to other models. When using remote sense in parallel operation, only the master sense leads connect to the device under test. Suitable parallel cables and rack mounting kits are available as accessories.
Installation and infrastructure
| Aspect | Requirement |
|---|---|
| AC supply | Single-phase for 1U models; three-phase for N362100-20-1100 and N362100-40-550. Plan connection ratings and wiring for the specific device configuration. |
| Environment | Operation at 0–40 °C, altitude <2,000 m and 5–90% relative humidity, non-condensing. |
| Cooling and installation | Keep ventilation openings unobstructed and ensure airflow. Account for chassis depth, connection space and mounting accessories when planning the rack. |
| Load connection | Size leads and connections for current and voltage; provide separate voltage feedback leads to the load when using remote sense. |
| Charging tests | Disable the internal discharge circuit before battery and capacitive load tests. |
Protection functions
Configurable protection functions monitor overvoltage, overcurrent and overpower as well as undervoltage and undercurrent. When protection trips, the output switches off and the protection status is displayed. Thresholds and timing parameters are provided for the respective functions. Internal overtemperature protection disables output if the device temperature becomes too high.
N36200 frequently asked questions
Are maximum voltage and maximum current available simultaneously?
Only if their product remains within rated power. All three limits matter: voltage, current and power.
When should CV or CC priority be used?
CV priority helps reduce voltage overshoot for sensitive electronics. CC priority reduces current overshoot, for example with low-impedance or capacitive devices.
What does remote sense do?
Separate voltage sensing at the load accounts for voltage drops in the load leads within the permitted compensation limit.
Is analog control included as standard?
COM2 is optional. Half-width 19-inch 1U models above 80 V do not support this option.
Can output power be expanded?
Yes, through master-slave parallel operation of identical models. Up to eight N362100-20-1100 units are supported; other configurations require separate system sizing.
Can the N36200 generate automotive voltage profiles?
Yes. Car Wave supports start-up profiles, voltage dips, load dump and voltage reset, among others. Required voltages and timing must suit the selected model.
How are battery charging tests terminated?
Charge Test stops charging when any configured time, voltage, current or capacity cut-off condition is reached. The internal discharge circuit must be disabled.
How does the instrument support ATE procedures?
Programmable sequences reproduce recurring supply steps. Digital interfaces enable remote control, while PC software can record measurement trends.
