N36100 programmable DC power supply overview
The N36100 series is a single-channel programmable DC power supply for development, laboratory work and automated test systems. The N36150 and N36190 ranges provide 500 W and 900 W respectively. Each power class offers five versions with maximum voltages of 20 V, 40 V, 80 V, 150 V or 300 V; the corresponding current limits range from 8 A to 100 A. Voltage, current and power jointly define the available operating point.
Operation is available through the OLED display, function keys and rotary control, or via the digital interfaces. In addition to conventional voltage regulation with current limiting, the series offers constant power operation, test sequences and simple internal resistance simulation. Remote sense measures voltage directly at the DUT. With a height of 43 mm and a width of 214 mm, the enclosure supports compact benchtop setups and the integration of multiple devices into a test station.
Key benefits
Compact integration
Up to 900 W in a 1U, half 19-inch enclosure reduces the space required for DC power in the laboratory and test rack.
Regulation priority matched to the load
Selectable voltage or current priority helps reduce startup overshoot of the parameter that is critical to the DUT.
Measure voltage at the DUT
Four-wire sensing compensates for voltage drops in the load leads up to the permitted sense limit of 2 V.
Repeat test profiles
Stored sequences execute defined voltage and current settings with dwell times, reducing manual adjustments during testing.
Reproduce source behaviour
A preset internal resistance produces a current-dependent voltage drop, enabling simple simulation of non-ideal DC sources.
Remote control and recording
Digital interfaces and PC software combine instrument control with measurement display and recording to support traceable test procedures.
Operating principle and regulation
In CV mode, the source maintains the set voltage until the current limit is reached. In CC mode, it regulates current and adjusts the output voltage to the load. CP mode adjusts voltage or current to maintain the set output power within the permitted limits.
CV/CC priority determines how the output is established. CV priority is suitable, for example, for powering sensitive low-voltage processors or FPGA cores. CC priority is intended for low-impedance loads such as batteries during charging or circuits with large capacitances. Priority should match the load because a subsequent transition between CV and CC can cause overshoot.
Models and available power range
| Model | Voltage range | Current range | Rated power | Channels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| N36150-20-100 | 0–20 V | 0–100 A | 500 W | 1 |
| N36150-40-50 | 0–40 V | 0–50 A | 500 W | 1 |
| N36150-80-25 | 0–80 V | 0–25 A | 500 W | 1 |
| N36150-150-14 | 0–150 V | 0–12 A | 500 W | 1 |
| N36150-300-8 | 0–300 V | 0–8 A | 500 W | 1 |
| N36190-20-100 | 0–20 V | 0–100 A | 900 W | 1 |
| N36190-40-50 | 0–40 V | 0–50 A | 900 W | 1 |
| N36190-80-25 | 0–80 V | 0–25 A | 900 W | 1 |
| N36190-150-12 | 0–150 V | 0–12 A | 900 W | 1 |
| N36190-300-8 | 0–300 V | 0–8 A | 900 W | 1 |
The maximum voltage and current values are not available simultaneously when their product exceeds the rated power. Within the permitted operating envelope, for U > 0: I_max = min(I_rated, P_rated/U).
N36190-20-100 example: At 20 V, the 900 W power limit allows a maximum of 45 A. An output current of 100 A is available at voltages up to 9 V.
Dynamic response and regulation
| Parameter | Value and condition |
|---|---|
| Transient recovery time | ≤1 ms for a 10–90% load change; recovery to within 0.5% of the rated output voltage. |
| No-load voltage rise time | ≤100 ms for 10–90% of full scale. |
| Line and load regulation | Voltage ≤0.05% each; current ≤0.1% each. |
| Programming response time | ≤10 ms; distinct from electrical rise and recovery times. |
Loaded rise and fall times depend on the selected model. Dynamic test profiles therefore require consideration of load behaviour, regulation priority and the DUT timing requirements in addition to the programmed values.
Operating modes and programmable functions
| Function | Operation and benefit |
|---|---|
| V/I and CP | Voltage regulation with current limiting or constant power operation for different power supply tasks. |
| SEQ | Up to 20 sequence files and 1,000 steps in total. Voltage, current, dwell time, voltage rise time and current rise time can be set for each step. Repetitions and file linking support multi-stage procedures. |
| Internal resistance simulation | Adjustable source voltage and internal resistance; output voltage decreases with increasing output current according to the selected resistance. |
| Auto Run | Automatic output activation after instrument startup with an adjustable delay. |
| Remote sense | Voltage measurement at the DUT through separate sense leads; maximum compensated voltage drop of 2 V. |
Typical applications
Laboratory electronics development
Power circuits at adjustable DC operating points. CV/CC priority helps adapt startup behaviour to sensitive or low-impedance DUTs.
Automotive electronics testing
Power vehicle components with programmed voltage and current profiles. SEQ reproduces repeatable supply changes, such as starting conditions, within the instrument and dynamic limits.
Production and ATE test systems
Integrate DC power into automated production test stations. Digital remote control and stored sequences support defined DUT supply conditions.
Industrial DC/DC converters
Provide an adjustable input voltage for converter testing. The wide-range output and current limiting accommodate different input operating points within the rated power.
Powering avionics components
Programmable DC power for avionics test setups. Setpoints and regulation priority can be matched to the electrical requirements of the component.
Small DC motors
Power small motors with adjustable voltage and current limiting. Inductive loads require suitable external protection against voltage spikes and back EMF.
Interfaces, software and automation
| Equipment | Availability | Function |
|---|---|---|
| LAN | Standard | Remote control over Ethernet using UDP communication. |
| RS232 | Standard | Serial remote control with adjustable baud rate. |
| RS485 and CAN | Standard | Bus connectivity; CANopen with configurable CAN ID and baud rate. |
| APG / PROG interface | Optional | Analogue voltage programming: a 0–5 V input signal corresponds to 0–100% output voltage. Only the voltage setpoint is programmed through this analogue function. |
| PC application software | Windows application | Control of normal, CP and sequence modes, display of readings and charts, data recording and access to historical measurements. |
Multiple devices can be controlled together from a PC over LAN. Each device requires a unique IP address. This allows multiple separately powered test channels to be operated within a shared control environment.
Installation and infrastructure
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| AC input | Single-phase, 220 V AC ±10%, 47–63 Hz. |
| Dimensions and weight | 43 × 214 × 420 mm (H × W × D), 1U, approximately 4 kg. |
| Environment | Operation 0–40 °C; storage −20–60 °C; relative humidity 5–90%, non-condensing; altitude <2,000 m. |

| Load and sense leads | Size load leads for current, voltage and cable length. Route sense leads separately from the AC input cable. |
Protection functions
Overvoltage protection (OVP), overcurrent protection (OCP) and overpower protection (OPP) use adjustable thresholds. If a threshold is exceeded, the output switches off and the instrument displays the protection message. Overtemperature protection (OTP) uses a fixed threshold and disables the output if the internal temperature becomes too high. Short-circuit protection is also provided.
Current limiting during normal CC operation is distinct from the OCP shutdown function. For inductive DUTs, external protection must be matched to the voltage transients and energy flow involved.
Frequently asked questions about the N36100 series
Are 300 V and 100 A available simultaneously?
No. These values belong to different models. In addition, the 500 W or 900 W rated power limits the combination of voltage and current available at the same operating point.
When should CV or CC priority be selected?
CV priority supports controlled voltage startup at sensitive voltage inputs. CC priority is intended for low-impedance loads, battery charging or large input capacitances.
How extensive can sequences be?
Up to 20 sequence files and 1,000 steps in total are available. Voltage, current and dwell time can be set for each step; repetitions and file linking extend the procedure.
What does remote sense compensate for?
Remote sense measures voltage at the DUT and compensates for the voltage drop in the load leads. The maximum compensated voltage drop is 2 V.
What does the optional analogue control provide?
A 0–5 V input signal sets the output voltage from zero to full scale. An analogue current setpoint is not supported by this function.
Can supply profiles for automotive electronics be created?
Yes. SEQ outputs defined voltage and current profiles, for example for tests involving starting conditions. The profile must remain within the electrical and dynamic limits of the selected model.
Can the series be used in ATE and production test stations?
Yes. Digital remote control, repeatable sequences and the compact enclosure support integration as a DC source. Multiple devices can be controlled from a PC using unique IP addresses.
Can the N36100 power industrial DC/DC converters?
Yes. It provides the adjustable DC input supply for converter testing. Model selection must account for input voltage, required current and power at the same operating point.
