Provide regulated voltage, current or power and adapt the output limits to the device under test and its operating conditions.
N3600 – Programmable Wide-Range DC Power Supply up to 9 kW
For laboratory, automotive and ATE testing with flexible voltage and current ranges and programmable sequences.
The N3600 series combines a power-limited wide-range output characteristic with programmable DC power for changing operating points. Within its voltage, current and power limits, one unit can supply different devices under test. The 19-inch format supports both laboratory use and integration into test systems.
Store up to 100 sequence files with up to 100 steps each for repeatable voltage and current profiles.
LAN and RS232 interfaces plus analogue setpoints using 0–5 V or 0–10 V support different automation architectures.
Remote sense compensates for voltage drops in the load leads by measuring the voltage directly at the device under test.

N3600 programmable DC power supply overview
The N3600 series is a programmable DC source for laboratories, development and automated testing. Its 36 models cover rated powers from 800 W to 9 kW. Depending on the model, the adjustable output extends from 0 to 16 V or up to 1,200 V, with maximum currents ranging from 5 A to 1,500 A. Voltage, current and power jointly define the available operating point.
In V/I operation, the unit changes between constant voltage and constant current according to the load and current limit. A dedicated CP mode supports power-controlled tests. Sequences, adjustable slew rates and external setpoints add defined test procedures to the DC supply. Operation is available through a 4.3-inch LCD, numeric keys and rotary controls or the integrated remote interfaces. Models up to 3 kW occupy 2U, 6 kW models occupy 4U and 9 kW models occupy 6U.
Key benefits
Cover multiple operating points
The wide-range characteristic provides different voltage and current combinations within rated power, supporting use with different devices under test.
Repeat test procedures
Sequence steps combine voltage, current, dwell time and slew rates. Repetitions and file linking support recurring tests.
Compensate for lead drops
Four-wire sensing measures voltage at the DUT. The maximum voltage drop that can be compensated is 2 V.
Accept external setpoints
Voltage and current can be programmed individually or together using analogue signals. Separate monitor outputs provide voltage and current feedback.
Recall settings quickly
20 memory locations store voltage and current settings. Recurring operating points can be recalled directly on the instrument.
Monitor operating limits
OVP, OCP, OPP and UVP complement overtemperature protection. CV/CC transition monitoring can switch off the output after a configurable period.
Operating principle: regulating voltage, current and power
In CV operation, the source maintains the set voltage while the required current remains within the current limit. If the load demands more current, regulation changes to CC and adjusts the voltage accordingly. In CP mode, voltage or current is adjusted to provide the set power within the configured voltage and current limits.
For inductive devices that return energy, a suitable additional electronic load can be connected as an external dissipater. Its voltage threshold is set above the N3600 setpoint by a configurable increment. If the DUT raises the voltage above this threshold, the external load absorbs the returned energy. Selecting and sizing this load is part of designing the test setup.
Models, power range and output characteristic
The table lists the limits of each individual unit. Maximum voltage and maximum current can only be used together if their product does not exceed rated power. For U > 0 within the permitted output characteristic: I_max = min(I_rated, P_rated / U).

Dynamics and regulation
Voltage and current slew rates are adjustable and can be assigned to individual sequence steps. The achievable dynamics depend on the model, load and configured limits. For the N3630-080-120, voltage rise time is no more than 20 ms at no load and no more than 500 ms at full load. Following a load change from 10% to 90%, voltage returns to within 0.5% of rated voltage in less than 20 ms. These figures apply to this particular model and are not universal series specifications.

Interfaces, software and automation
| Equipment | Function and scope |
|---|---|
| LAN and RS232 | Integrated remote-control interfaces. SCPI and MODBUS are selectable communication protocols. |
| Analogue programming | 0–5 V or 0–10 V represents zero to the respective full scale. Voltage, current or both can be set externally. |
| Analogue monitoring | Separate voltage and current monitor outputs use 0–10 V for zero to full scale. |
| Digital signals | External output control, status signals and four programmable TTL outputs on the programming connector. |
| RS485 and current sharing | Connections for master-slave operation; parallel operation additionally requires a current-sharing cable. |
| PC application software | V/I, CP and SEQ control, voltage/current graphs and data recording with Excel export. The described LAN connection uses MODBUS. |
Parallel and series operation
Parallel operation supports up to ten units with identical specifications, including one master. RS485 communication and additional current-sharing cables coordinate the group. Setpoints, measurements and status are controlled or displayed centrally at the master. Master/slave roles are assigned at the factory; changing a role requires recalibration by the supplier.
Series operation is specified for a maximum of two units with identical specifications and a rated voltage below 600 V. Other series configurations require project-specific consultation. Parallel and series operation must not be combined simultaneously. If a unit triggers a protection shutdown, the output of the entire group is switched off.
Installation and infrastructure
| Item | Configuration |
|---|---|
| Enclosure | 19-inch format; 800 W to 3 kW: 2U, 6 kW: 4U, 9 kW: 6U. |
| Mains connection | Up to 3 kW: single-phase appliance inlet; 6 kW: single-phase L/N/PE; 9 kW: three-phase L1/L2/L3/N/PE. Observe the input ratings of the specific configuration. |
| Operating environment | 0–40 °C; 5–90% relative humidity, non-condensing; altitude below 2,000 m. |
| Cooling and installation | Keep air openings clear and provide adequate ventilation. Include terminal covers and cable space when planning installation depth. |
| Connection accessories | Select test leads for current, voltage and cable length. Parallel cables and dedicated rack-mounting brackets are optional accessories. |
Protection functions
Overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, overpower and overtemperature protection switch off the output when their trip conditions are met and show the condition on the display. OCP includes an adjustable response time. Transitions between CV and CC can also be monitored against a time limit. Fan and cascade-group faults are detected as well. Protection thresholds and monitoring periods should match the DUT and its start-up behaviour.
Frequently asked questions about the N3600 series
Are maximum voltage and maximum current available together?
Only if voltage multiplied by current remains within rated power. The N3630-240-060 is limited to 12.5 A at 240 V by its 3 kW power rating.
Which operating modes are available?
CV and CC in V/I operation, plus a dedicated CP mode. Voltage and current limits also apply during CP operation.
How large can sequences be?
Up to 100 files with up to 100 steps each. Each step specifies voltage, current, dwell time and slew rates.
Which analogue signals can be used?
Setpoint inputs can use 0–5 V or 0–10 V. Voltage and current monitor outputs use 0–10 V.
How are voltage drops in the leads handled?
Remote sense measures voltage at the DUT through separate sense wires and compensates for a voltage drop of up to 2 V.
Can supply profiles for automotive electronics be tested?
Yes. SEQ can output user-defined voltage and current profiles for automotive electronics and engine start-up tests. Required levels and timing must remain within the model’s dynamic capability.
Can the unit be used in production test systems?
Yes. The N3600 can be integrated into ATE systems. LAN, RS232 and programmable procedures support repeatable DC power for DUTs.
What needs consideration when powering motors?
Motors can return energy. A suitable additional electronic load can be connected as a dissipater, with its voltage threshold set above the N3600 setpoint.
