N35100 bidirectional DC power supply overview
The N35100 bidirectional DC power supply powers devices under test and absorbs returned electrical energy. In sink operation, this energy is fed back into the supply grid, reducing energy consumption and heat dissipation compared with a purely dissipative load. The model family comprises 2.5, 5 and 7.5 kW power ratings with voltage variants for 40, 80 and 300 V. Voltage, current and power jointly define the available operating point.
The 40 V and 80 V versions occupy just 1U; the N35125-80-55 uses a half-width 19-inch chassis. The series is operated through a 3.2-inch colour display, keys and a rotary encoder, or by remote control. Programmable sequences, separate source/sink limits and complementary simulation software support battery, converter and drive testing.
Key benefits
Bidirectional energy flow
Source and sink functions share one instrument, allowing changing energy flows without rewiring between a separate source and load.
Wide operating range
Different voltage and current combinations use the same power rating. Select the model for the actual operating point.
Sense voltage at the DUT
Four-wire remote sensing compensates for lead voltage drops and supports a defined supply voltage at the DUT terminals.
Link test profiles
Up to ten sequence files with 1,000 steps each can run cyclically and link to subsequent files.
Integrate external signals
Analogue programming and digital status signals connect electrical setpoints, output control and test-system sequences.
Emulate battery behaviour
Internal resistance simulation and software-based battery curves enable tests under defined electrical supply conditions.
Operating principle: source and regenerative load
The output voltage remains positive while current can flow in either direction. In source operation, the instrument supplies energy; in sink operation, it absorbs and regenerates energy. Positive current and power readings indicate source operation, while negative values indicate sink operation.
V/I operation provides voltage regulation with separate source and sink current and power limits. Load operation offers CC, CV, CR and CP for constant current, voltage, resistance or power loading.
Power range and model selection
| Model | Voltage range | Source/sink current | Source/sink power |
|---|---|---|---|
| N35125-40-100 | 0–40 V | ±100 A | ±2.5 kW |
| N35150-40-200 | 0–40 V | ±200 A | ±5 kW |
| N35175-40-300 | 0–40 V | ±300 A | ±7.5 kW |
| N35125-80-55 | 0–80 V | ±55 A | ±2.5 kW |
| N35150-80-110 | 0–80 V | ±110 A | ±5 kW |
| N35175-80-170 | 0–80 V | ±170 A | ±7.5 kW |
| N35125-300-25 | 0–300 V | ±25 A | ±2.5 kW |
| N35150-300-50 | 0–300 V | ±50 A | ±5 kW |
| N35175-300-75 | 0–300 V | ±75 A | ±7.5 kW |
Maximum voltage and maximum current are not fully available simultaneously. P = U × I applies. Within the permitted operating curve and for U > 0, available current is limited by I = min(I-rated, P-rated/U). The minimum operating voltage in load mode must also be observed.
Example N35175-80-170: At 80 V, the power limit allows up to 93.75 A. The rated current of 170 A is available only up to approximately 44.12 V within the 7.5 kW limit.
Dynamic response, control and measurement
CC/CV priority adapts transitions to the DUT: CV priority supports controlled voltage delivery, for example to DC/DC modules; CC priority suits low-impedance DUTs and battery charging. Adjustable voltage and current slew rates and control-loop speeds allow tuning to the test setup.
| Parameter | 40 V and 80 V models |
|---|---|
| Voltage: setting/readback resolution | 1 mV |
| Voltage: setting accuracy / readback accuracy | 0.02% + 0.02% F.S. / ≤0.02% + 0.02% F.S. |
| Current: setting/readback resolution | 1 mA |
| Current: setting accuracy / readback accuracy | 0.1% + 0.1% F.S. / ≤0.1% + 0.1% F.S. |
| Voltage rise, 10–90% | ≤10 ms at no load; ≤30 ms at full load |
Accuracy specifications apply at 23 ±5 °C. Precision measurements require 30 minutes of warm-up, calibration within the previous year and relative humidity up to 80%. F.S. denotes the respective full-scale value.
Operating modes and programmable functions
| Function | Operation and benefit |
|---|---|
| SEQ routines | Ten files, up to 1,000 steps per file; voltage, source/sink current and source/sink power setpoints, dwell times, slew rates and file linking. |
| Charge / discharge | Charging with voltage and current settings; discharging with current and power settings. Termination criteria include voltage, current, capacity and time, depending on the mode. |
| Internal resistance simulation | Output voltage follows Vo = Vs − Io × Ri. An adjustable series resistance emulates the load-dependent voltage drop of a battery. |
| Automotive profiles | Selectable vehicle electrical-system profiles for voltage dips, resets and starting, plus LV124 E-04 and E-07. Each profile must remain within voltage, current, power and dynamic limits. |
| Step, Wave and AnyWave | PC software supports steps, time-based curves, and sine, triangle and pulse profiles. Achievable waveforms depend on amplitude, frequency and instrument bandwidth. |
Typical applications
Batteries and energy storage
Test batteries and storage systems for portable applications and UPS using defined charge/discharge parameters; regenerate energy during sink operation.
DC/DC converter testing
Provide a controlled supply to converter inputs or defined loading of converter outputs. CC/CV priority and load modes support the requirements of each test side.
Motor controllers and drives
Supply the DC side of motor controllers and inverters and absorb returned energy within the selected model’s operating range.
Automotive electronics and electrical systems
Reproduce supply changes using SEQ and automotive profiles, for example for startup and reset tests on vehicle electrical components.
PV inverter testing
Use optional NS91000 simulation to apply defined I-V and P-V curves to the DC input and evaluate static and dynamic MPPT behaviour.
Battery-powered drone components
Provide a repeatable electrical supply to battery-powered components; NS81000 adds simulation of different battery characteristic curves.
Interfaces, software and automation
| Equipment | Function and scope |
|---|---|
| LAN / RS232 / RS485 / CAN | Standard interfaces for remote control and integration. |
| SCPI / Modbus-RTU / CANopen | Supported communication protocols; configure the connection and protocol for the selected controller. |
| Analogue and digital I/O | Analogue programming and monitoring with 0–5 V or 0–10 V; digital output enable control, fault indication and interlock function. |
| N35100 PC software | Parameter configuration, test routines, graph display and historical measurement-data logging over LAN. |
| NS81000 | Complementary battery simulation software with seven standard battery models and two custom characteristic-curve types. |
| NS91000 | Optional PV simulation with static and dynamic Sandia/EN50530 profiles, plus weather and shading scenarios. |
Scaling through parallel operation
For higher current and power, the series supports master/slave parallel operation with up to ten instruments of the same specification. One instrument acts as master; slaves receive unique addresses. Voltage remains within the range of a single instrument.
Plan the parallel connection, suitable communication cables and instrument configuration together. With remote sensing in a parallel system, the master measures voltage at the compensation point. Optical parallel cables are available as accessories.
Installation and infrastructure
| Item | Configuration |
|---|---|
| N35125-80-55 | 1U, half-width 19-inch chassis; 214 × 540 mm (W × D, including output shield); approximately 5.1 kg; 220 V AC ±10%. |
| Other 40 V / 80 V models | 1U, 19-inch format; 428 × 711.2 mm (W × D, including output shield); three-phase 380 V AC ±10% with protective earth. |
| Supply frequency | 47–63 Hz |
| Operating conditions | 0–40 °C; 5–90% relative humidity, non-condensing; altitude below 2,000 m. |
| Connections and cooling | Size the supply connection according to the instrument marking. Select power leads for the voltage and current, and keep air inlets and outlets clear. |
Protection functions
OVP, OCP and OPP monitor overvoltage, overcurrent and overpower; UVP and UCP add undervoltage and undercurrent monitoring. Configurable thresholds and delays adapt monitoring to the test sequence. A triggered protection switches off the output and displays an alarm. Overtemperature protection is also integrated.
The configurable I/O interlock inhibits the output when the external contact opens. Interlock settings, wiring and the overall safety concept must be coordinated for the test system.
