N3410 series overview

The N3410 series is a programmable triple-channel DC power supply for laboratory, R&D, education, production inspection and maintenance tasks. Three independent output channels are integrated into a compact half-rack 19-inch, 2U enclosure. Depending on the model, CH1 and CH2 provide up to 60 V or 5 A, while CH3 delivers up to 6 V and 3 A throughout the series. Total output power ranges from 210 W to 378 W. CH1 and CH2 can be coupled internally for series or parallel operation and used in tracking mode to generate symmetrical supply voltages. Standard and P models add programmable sequences and a real-time graphical display to manual operation. P versions also include an integrated DVM for external voltage measurements. LAN, RS232, remote sense and front and rear output terminals support both manually operated and automated test systems.

Technical classification: The N3410 series is a linear-regulated three-channel DC power supply designed for applications requiring a precise, low-noise power supply.

Key benefits

Three independent outputs

Three separately adjustable channels supply DUTs with multiple voltage rails from one compact instrument. Output-to-ground isolation is rated at 500 V DC.

Fine programming resolution

Standard and P models provide setting and readback resolution down to 0.1 mV and 0.1 mA on CH1 and CH2.

Low ripple and noise

Voltage ripple is no more than 1 mVrms, with model- and channel-dependent limits of 5 mVp-p or 10 mVp-p.

Remote sense per channel

Dedicated sense connections compensate for voltage drops in the load leads. The maximum permitted compensation is 2 V.

External voltage measurement

P models integrate a 5½-digit DVM with automatic ranges of ±6 V, ±60 V and ±600 V.

Bench and rack operation

The half-rack enclosure with carrying handle and tilt stand is suited to benchtop use; a 19-inch rack-mounting kit is available separately.

Programmable DC power supply operating principle

Each N3410 output provides regulated DC voltage with an adjustable current limit. In CV operation, the instrument maintains the programmed output voltage. When the DUT reaches the selected current limit, the corresponding channel changes to CC operation and limits the output current. Setpoints and readback values are displayed separately for each channel.

Constant-voltage operation

The output voltage is regulated for supplying DUTs within the available current and power range of the selected channel.

Constant-current limiting

The programmed current value limits the output and supports controlled power-up, loading and troubleshooting procedures.

Output terminals are provided on both the front and rear panels. The active output position can be selected in the instrument configuration menu.

Models, power range and technical ratings

Model selection is based on the voltage and current required from CH1 and CH2. CH3 is provided on every model as an additional 6 V, 3 A output. The series and parallel ratings refer to the internal coupling of CH1 and CH2.

Model family CH1 / CH2 per channel CH3 CH1 + CH2 series operation CH1 + CH2 parallel operation Total power

CH3 resolution is 1 mV and 1 mA on all versions. Programming and readback accuracies vary by model and channel.

Dynamic response and regulation

The transient recovery time following a load change is no more than 1 ms. This value refers to transient recovery and is distinct from the voltage rise time. Rise and fall times depend on the channel, model and load condition.

Operating modes and programmable functions

Independent operation

In normal mode, CH1, CH2 and CH3 are configured separately and can be switched on individually or together.

Series operation

CH1 and CH2 are coupled to increase output voltage. Avoid constant-current operation in this mode.

Parallel operation

Coupling CH1 and CH2 increases the available output current to 6 A or 10 A, depending on the model.

Tracking mode

CH2 follows CH1 with reversed polarity, allowing coupled positive and negative supply voltages to be generated.

Sequence operation

Voltage, current, step duration and cycle count can be combined into test profiles and saved internally or on USB storage.

Timer and real-time graph

The timer switches a channel off after the selected period. Standard and P models also display voltage and current graphically.

Sequence operation and the graphical display are not available on the N3411E, N3412E and N3413E models.

Typical applications

The three separately programmable outputs support test setups in which a DUT requires several supply rails or multiple circuits need to be powered at the same time.

Research and development

Prototypes and electronic DUTs can be supplied from several independently adjustable rails. Current limiting, remote sense and measurement readback support repeatable experiments.

Education and university laboratories

The colour display, separate channel controls and CV/CC operation support practical exercises covering power supplies, load behaviour and electronic circuits.

Production and end-of-line testing

Assemblies are supplied with defined voltage and current values. LAN control, sequences and data recording support repeatable test procedures.

Maintenance and service

Devices and assemblies can be powered under controlled conditions during troubleshooting and repair. Adjustable current limits help reduce the risk of further DUT damage.

Interfaces, software and automation

The N3410 series supports local operation as well as integration into PC-based test setups. LAN and RS232 are included as standard interfaces.

Function Status Technical implementation
LAN Standard RJ45 interface, default IP address 192.168.0.123; communication response time ≤5 ms
RS232 Standard Serial interface with a default baud rate of 9,600; RS232 crossover cable included
USB Type-A Standard Connection for USB storage, screenshots and saving or loading sequence files
N341X PC software Standard software LAN connection, device scanning, setpoint control, operating modes, channel control, real-time graphs and data recording; Windows 7 or later
Remote sense Standard function Separate sense connections for CH1, CH2 and CH3; maximum 2 V lead-drop compensation; suitable sense cable available separately
DVM P models only One measurement channel, 5½ digits, ±6 V / ±60 V / ±600 V, 4 Hz measurement rate and 10 MΩ input impedance

The front USB port is intended for use with a storage device. Remote-control capability via USB must not be assumed.

Series operation, parallel operation and output scaling

Output scaling is performed within one N3410 instrument by coupling CH1 and CH2. The required operating mode is selected from the front panel, eliminating the need for a separate external series or parallel interconnection between these two channels.

N3411 and N3412

Series operation provides up to 64 V. Parallel operation supplies up to 6 A on the N3411 and up to 10 A on the N3412.

N3413

The 60 V model reaches up to 120 V by coupling CH1 and CH2 in series or up to 6 A in parallel operation.

Symmetrical supply rails

In tracking mode, CH2 follows the CH1 settings with negative polarity to create coupled positive and negative supply rails.
