LAB/HP programmable DC power supply overview
The LAB/HP series is a microcontroller-controlled high-power DC source for laboratories, development and automated test systems. It covers power classes from 3 to 63 kW, voltage variants up to 1,500 V and current variants up to 2,250 A. A 2,000 V version is available as an option after the application has been reviewed. Depending on power and current class, the modular 19-inch design ranges from 2U to 9U; up to 21 kW is available in 3U.
The TFT touch display presents setpoints and measured values for voltage, current, power and load resistance. In addition to conventional voltage/current control, the unit offers power limiting, internal-resistance emulation, PV characteristic simulation and freely programmable characteristics. For test-system integration, the standard version includes a galvanically isolated ATI 5/10 analogue interface, RS232, LAN, soft interlock and ETS-bus master/slave. The reduced-function LAB/HP/E version omits master/slave, soft interlock, UIP, UIR and PVSim, among other features.
Key benefits
Broad power scaling
Thirteen power classes from 3 to 63 kW and numerous voltage/current combinations support precise adaptation to the operating point.
High power density
Up to 21 kW fits into a 3U 19-inch enclosure; very high-current low-voltage versions may require more rack space.
Programmable characteristics
PVSim and User mode reproduce PV or freely defined V/I characteristics for repeatable operating points and curve profiles.
Autonomous sequences
Scripts of up to 1,000 commands control setpoints, delays, loops and output states directly from the storage medium.
Compensate cable drop
Remote sense compensates voltage drops up to 10 percent of rated output voltage within the permissible characteristic.
Flexible system topologies
Up to eight units can be coordinated through the ETS bus for parallel, series or electrically independent outputs.
Operating principle and control
A microcontroller generates the commands for the analogue power regulator. In UI mode, voltage and current setpoints are passed directly to the switch-mode regulator. In UIP mode, an additional digital controller limits output power. UIR calculates the voltage setpoint from output current and the selected internal resistance according to Vtarget = Vset - Iout × Ri, thereby emulating a source with internal resistance.
PVSim uses open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and voltage and current at the maximum power point. User-defined characteristics can store support points and run them as stepped or linearly interpolated curves. Current and voltage rise ramps can be limited separately when leaving standby.
Power range and unit selection
The following classes cover the complete standard power range in the data sheet. The voltages are example variants; other voltages are planned from a quantity of one. Current rating, voltage rating and nominal power must be considered together: usable current at the operating point is limited by both the current rating and the power limit.
| Nominal power | Basic enclosure | Example voltage range | Highest current rating in matrix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 kW | 2U | 15-1,500 V | 250 A |
| 4 kW | 2U | 15-1,500 V | 500 A |
| 5 kW | 2U | 15-1,500 V | 500 A |
| 7 kW | 2U | 15-1,500 V | 500 A |
| 10 kW | 3U | 15-1,500 V | 666 A |
| 15 kW | 3U | 15-1,500 V | 1,000 A |
| 21 kW | 3U | 20-1,500 V | 1,250 A |
| 30 kW | 6U | 20-1,500 V | 1,500 A |
| 35 kW | 6U | 20-1,500 V | 1,750 A |
| 45 kW | 6U | 20-1,500 V | 2,250 A |
| 49 kW | 9U | 25-1,500 V | 2,000 A |
| 56 kW | 9U | 25-1,500 V | 2,250 A |
| 63 kW | 9U | 30-1,500 V | 2,100 A |
Selection note: Some low-voltage, high-current variants differ from the basic enclosure, including 15 kW at 15 V and 21 kW at 20 or 25 V. The exact height, depth, mains version and terminal arrangement must therefore be defined for the selected configuration.

Dynamics, stability and measured values
Depending on voltage class, full-load rise times range from 6 to 40 ms and full-load fall times from 15 to 100 ms. For the 1,401 to 1,500 V class, the specified values are 6 ms rise time and 25 ms fall time. After dynamic load changes, output voltage returns within 0.5 percent of rated output plus/minus 25 mV in less than 3 ms.
| Characteristic | Specification |
|---|---|
| Static regulation | plus/minus 0.1% of full scale |

ETS bus, parallel and series operation
Up to eight LAB/HP units can be connected through the ETS bus. The USB Type-A cables are used exclusively as bus cables and must not be connected to a USB interface. There is no permanently assigned master unit: setpoints are forwarded from the unit currently being operated to all participants.
In parallel mode, the system displays total current; in series mode, it displays total voltage. Distribution between individual units is not necessarily symmetrical. In independent mode, the outputs remain electrically separate and exchange only setpoints through the bus. A maximum of 2,000 V is specified for series connection. Master/slave cannot be combined with operation from the storage medium.

LAB/HP series FAQ
How is the appropriate LAB/HP version selected?
All required voltage/current operating points, nominal power, enclosure height, mains version, interfaces and options are decisive. Particularly high currents may require a larger enclosure.
Can maximum voltage and maximum current be used simultaneously?
Only within the nominal power of the selected unit. Both current rating and power limit restrict the operating point, so V, I and P must be checked together.
What is the difference between LAB/HP and LAB/HP/E?
LAB/HP/E is the reduced-function version. Master/slave, soft interlock, and UIP, UIR and PVSim modes are not available.
Which interfaces are available?
The standard LAB/HP includes ATI 5/10, RS232 and LAN. IEEE 488, RS485 and USB are optional digital interfaces; up to three digital interfaces are possible.
How much cable drop can remote sense compensate?
Within the output characteristic, it can compensate a maximum of 10 percent of maximum output voltage. Sense leads must never carry load current.
Can the LAB/HP simulate a PV source?
Yes. PVSim uses open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and the MPP operating point to reproduce the characteristic of a PV generator.
Can test sequences run without an active PC?
Yes. Scripts containing up to 1,000 commands can be loaded from the storage medium and started automatically. Data logging is a separate option.
Is the source suitable for motor-start testing?
Yes. t-Enable provides time-limited power for examining motor-starting processes. The optional freewheeling diode is provided for induced reverse voltage.
How does the LAB/HP support laser-diode testing?
Separately adjustable V-Slope and I-Slope functions limit the voltage or current rise when the output is enabled.
