CC, linear CC, CR, CP, CV and non-linear rectifier modes are available for AC and DC testing.
AEL-5000 – Programmable AC/DC Electronic Load up to 22.5 kW Continuous Power
For reproducible load and protection testing of UPS systems, inverters and power sources.
The wide AC/DC operating envelope supports sine-wave sources as well as PWM, stepped and square-wave outputs. Linear consumers, rectifier-based input stages and time-defined load profiles can therefore be evaluated using one consistent instrument platform.
Short-circuit, OCP, OPP and protection-component tests can temporarily use up to twice the rated current and power.
Load angles, half-wave operation, crest factor, power factor and SCR or TRIAC profiles reproduce practical consumer behaviour.
GPIB, RS-232, USB and LAN support integration into automated test systems and documented test sequences.

AEL-5000 series overview
The AEL-5000 is a programmable, dissipative high-power electronic load for single-phase AC and DC testing. The series comprises 20 models with continuous power ratings from 1.875 to 22.5 kW, AC input ranges up to 350, 425 or 480 Vrms and DC input voltages up to 500, 600 or 700 V. Depending on the model, current ratings extend to 112.5 Arms or 337.5 Apeak. In addition to conventional load modes, the platform supports linear current loading, non-linear rectifier loads, phase-related current waveforms and time-controlled protection tests. An integrated 16-bit measurement circuit records RMS, peak, minimum and maximum values, real and apparent power, power factor, crest factor and voltage or current harmonics. Identical units can be combined through master/slave operation or configured as a three-phase star or delta load.
Key benefits
One platform for AC and DC
Sine-wave AC outputs, non-sinusoidal waveforms and DC sources can be tested without separate load systems.
Non-linear consumers
Rectifier and combined CC/CR loads reproduce typical input stages of UPS systems, power supplies and PV inverters.
Short-term protection testing
Turbo mode temporarily extends current and power for short-circuit, fuse, OCP and OPP tests.
Integrated power analysis
Voltage, current, W, VA, VAR, PF, CF, frequency, THD and individual harmonics are evaluated directly by the instrument.
Phase-related load events
Load and unload angles can be programmed across the complete cycle and combined with half-wave or phase-control profiles.
Scalable load systems
Up to eight identical units per phase can be linked and operated centrally from a master instrument.
Operating principle of the AC/DC electronic load
The AEL-5000 absorbs electrical energy from the connected device under test and converts it into heat inside the load. It is therefore a dissipative electronic load and does not return the absorbed energy to the utility grid.
During AC operation, current can be drawn independently of the input voltage, proportionally to the voltage or according to a defined power, voltage or rectifier characteristic. Linear CC mode follows non-sinusoidal input waveforms and is suitable for PWM, stepped and square-wave voltages. CC, linear CC, CR, CP, CV and non-linear configurations are also available for DC testing.
Power range and operating envelope
The model range combines three AC voltage classes with graduated current and power ratings. Rated power is not available at every arbitrary voltage and current point. The permitted operating point is determined by the model-specific voltage-current curve, continuous power rating and maximum RMS or peak current.
Turbo ratings are time-limited test values and must not be interpreted as continuous power. Permitted duration and programmable parameters depend on the selected short-circuit, fuse, OCP or OPP function.

AEL-5000 FAQ
Can the AEL-5000 test both AC and DC sources?
Yes. The series supports AC and DC inputs with operating modes for sinusoidal, non-sinusoidal and constant-voltage sources.
Is Turbo power available continuously?
No. Turbo is a time-limited function for selected short-circuit, fuse, OCP and OPP tests and does not replace the continuous rating.
Which models support the highest input voltage?
The 480 Vrms models support up to 700 Vdc. Their AC frequency range is limited to 40 to 70 Hz and must be considered during model selection.
Can three-phase devices under test be loaded?
Yes. Three identical instruments or three identical instrument groups can operate in 3PH mode as a star or delta load.
Which remote interfaces are available?
GPIB, RS-232, USB and LAN are available as optional interface cards. Master/slave, sense, monitor and synchronisation connections are provided on the instrument.
Can the load measure UPS transfer time?
Yes. The integrated transfer test measures the switching time of an offline UPS when it changes to battery operation.
Is battery discharge testing supported?
Yes. Batteries can be loaded in CC, linear CC, CR or CP mode until a voltage threshold or programmed discharge time is reached.
Does the AEL-5000 recover energy?
No. It is a dissipative electronic load. The absorbed electrical energy is converted into heat inside the load system.
Technical consultation and project enquiry
To select the appropriate voltage, current and power range, we require the electrical operating points, waveform, frequency range and information about continuous operation, short-term loading and the planned automation concept.
For parallel or three-phase systems, we also support the selection of instrument quantity, wiring, interface configuration, load connections and thermal integration.
